10th JanuaryGentleman Tim and the Contenderswww.gentlemantim.com

Returning to Marigolds after a sensational gig in 2012 the bands influences remain deeply rooted in early 50’s style Swing,West Coast and Chicago Blues, Gentleman Tim and the Contenders are one of the hottest bands on the scene today. Led by the inspirational harmonica player and vocalist Tim Corbett they deliver a brand of high energy jumpin’ blues that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your toes tappin’. Tim Corbett is much admired by audiences and his peers alike and is recognised for his technical mastery of the harmonica and his powerful vocal performance.

TJ Cadman is a stylish guitar master that gets to the very heart of the music with his irresistible style, slick solo’s and sophisticated chord patterns. Jason Reay on drums re-creates the simplicity and feel of the ‘old school’ bluesmen. His swinging rhythms and lazy shuffles combined with great dynamics are perfect for the band’s musical style.Paul Davis brings to the band those authentic warm solid tones of the Double Bass which gives the band it’s unique Chicago Style sound.

31st January – The Ted Beament Quintet

Ted Beament keyboards, Colin Watling saxophone, Nick Page guitar, Murray Salmon bass and Les Cirkel drums. With the exception of Les on drums the band are no strangers to Marigolds having entertained our aficionados royally on a number of occasions in the past.

Ted is a local lad, living as he does on the outskirts of Harlow. He is one of the finest pianists that Britain has to offer and has played alongside many fine soloists and is a mainstay of the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Colin Watling is rated by many as one of the most exciting tenor saxophonists on the circuit with his melodic, swinging sound and the full gamut of musical styles but always in great humour. It has been often said that Nick Page is the most underrated Jazz Guitarist in the UK. Extremely talented, versatile and inspirational Nick has played with a huge list of fine musicians plus he is a composer and educator and band leader in his own right. Murray Salmon taught himself double bass and went on to back some of the top acts of the seventies (Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Buddy Greco et al.) as well as playing on the SS Canberra and performing all over the world. Cliff Richard, Des O’Connor, Dana, Cilla Black, The Drifters and Princess Anne are just a few of the people talented Les Cirkel on drums has entertained or played with over the years as well as passing on his expertise and knowledge as a teacher for aspiring drummers.

, 7 High Street, Leigh on Sea, Essex SS9 2EN. Every Tuesday 8-30-11pm. Free admission, contact 07888 751062 or see www.anniesjazz.co.uk for more. Upcoming gigs A great line-up of returning artistes!! Please visit the new facebook page Annies Jazz @yeoldesmack. anniesjazz@googlemail.com

Reuben began playing piano and violin at five years old and was raised on an eclectic mix of music including jazz, gospel, neo soul, hip hop, RnB and classical music. His professional journey began in church where he would play every week fine honing his skills in improvisation and the blues. This eventually led him to study at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Reuben made a big splash at our festival last year with his trio. Still a student at Trinity Laban, he first played at our venue with the late Abram Wilson. He is one of the most exciting performers on the scene, drawing inspiration from Gospel, Soul and of course a healthy dose of jazz piano masters. Thursday Night Saxophone Workshop

The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.
Saxophone Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels Welcome at St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Thursday Night Jazz Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P’s Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.
Jazz Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels/Instruments Welcome. St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year’s Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhaywood@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP’s arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger’s review is likely to be used.

A great recording studio based in Reading, but very reasonably priced with a producer who has got a great feel for the style as well as being incredibly friendly and helpful. For jazz fans there is a new blog which is well worth reading, written by Josh Jennings. The British Jazz Blog aims to celebrate, and give a platform to, the fantastic British jazz scene. Focusing on the contemporary side of the genre, the articles are written in a personal, informal manner, ideal for getting people from outside of the genre just as excited about the music as hardcore fans of jazz! www.britishjazzblog.com

And finally … NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
