Thursday 30th January with Tony Sandeman’s Natural Selection
Admission £10 (pay on the door). Doors open 8pm, music from 8.30pm.

Tony Sandeman’s Natural Selection really is what it says; Tony’s “dream band” selected from some of the finest players on the scene today. First put together at the beginning of 2013 for a few very successful gigs , this is a rare opportunity to see this great band between other commitments. Martin Johnson on drums has been recording and touring extensively throughout the continent with Jo Harman this year. Those familiar with Zak Barrett on saxes will be aware of his work with Guthrie Govan in the band The Fellowship of Funk who have also been working in Europe this year. Dan Banks who joined the band in the summer is a prodigious talent and has become one of the busiest keyboard players and arrangers in Essex. If you haven’t seen bass player Andy Staples before you are in for a nice surprise, he is one of the most outstanding bass players in the UK working with among many others guitar virtuoso Alex Hutchinson, it’s a real privilege to have him on board. Tony Sandeman was one of the founder members of the band C-Level with Gary Plumley who frequently features on the programme at the Jazz Mix. This is a new direction for Tony incorporating all the styles of music he loves from straight ahead groove through Jazz and Latin with a bit of Ceilidh thrown in the mix as well. Tony and co-arranger Dan will be putting a few new twists on some old favourites plus some tunes you may not have heard before on what promises to be a very special night of music!

Thursday 27th FebruaryTommy Blaize Band – The Tommy Blaize Band are the most famous UK group you never knew you knew. www.tommyblaizeband.com

Drawing its members from the Strictly Come Dancing house band, the group routinely perform week after week to millions of viewers on the BBC’s primetime weekend show. Now after years earning a reputation as some of the most accomplished session musicians in the business, the group are set to step into the limelight in their own right with their own material, after the clamour from fans of the show (and even Bruce Forsyth) became too much to ignore. Led by truly phenomenal lead singer Tommy Blaize, who has collaborated with everyone from Basement Jaxx and Stevie Wonder to Amy Winehouse and Robbie Williams, the list of legendary names that Tommy and his band mates David Arch (keyboards), Paul Dunne (guitar), Andy Caine (guitar), Trevor Barry (bass) and Ian Thomas (drums) have worked with simply reads like a who’s who of music. Co-Produced by Grammy nominated producer Steve Price, ‘Don’t Ya Love Life’ features twelve original tracks penned by the group that are simply so instantly ‘classic’, you find yourself wondering why you’ve never heard them before, or if you maybe even had that first dance with the love of your life to their music!

Thursday 29th MayShakatak. www.shakatak.com
Tickets are now on sale at the Cliffs Pavilion Box Office – £20

It’s really fantastic to welcome to the club legendary jazz/funk outfit Shakatak to close off the season in real style! Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an “underground” element. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high “cult” status and instant recognition as a household name.

10th JanuaryGentleman Tim and the Contenderswww.gentlemantim.com

Returning to Marigolds after a sensational gig in 2012 the bands influences remain deeply rooted in early 50’s style Swing,West Coast and Chicago Blues, Gentleman Tim and the Contenders are one of the hottest bands on the scene today. Led by the inspirational harmonica player and vocalist Tim Corbett they deliver a brand of high energy jumpin’ blues that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your toes tappin’. Tim Corbett is much admired by audiences and his peers alike and is recognised for his technical mastery of the harmonica and his powerful vocal performance.

TJ Cadman is a stylish guitar master that gets to the very heart of the music with his irresistible style, slick solo’s and sophisticated chord patterns. Jason Reay on drums re-creates the simplicity and feel of the ‘old school’ bluesmen. His swinging rhythms and lazy shuffles combined with great dynamics are perfect for the band’s musical style.Paul Davis brings to the band those authentic warm solid tones of the Double Bass which gives the band it’s unique Chicago Style sound.

31st January – The Ted Beament Quintet

Ted Beament keyboards, Colin Watling saxophone, Nick Page guitar, Murray Salmon bass and Les Cirkel drums. With the exception of Les on drums the band are no strangers to Marigolds having entertained our aficionados royally on a number of occasions in the past.

Ted is a local lad, living as he does on the outskirts of Harlow. He is one of the finest pianists that Britain has to offer and has played alongside many fine soloists and is a mainstay of the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Colin Watling is rated by many as one of the most exciting tenor saxophonists on the circuit with his melodic, swinging sound and the full gamut of musical styles but always in great humour. It has been often said that Nick Page is the most underrated Jazz Guitarist in the UK. Extremely talented, versatile and inspirational Nick has played with a huge list of fine musicians plus he is a composer and educator and band leader in his own right. Murray Salmon taught himself double bass and went on to back some of the top acts of the seventies (Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Buddy Greco et al.) as well as playing on the SS Canberra and performing all over the world. Cliff Richard, Des O’Connor, Dana, Cilla Black, The Drifters and Princess Anne are just a few of the people talented Les Cirkel on drums has entertained or played with over the years as well as passing on his expertise and knowledge as a teacher for aspiring drummers.

*** MUSIC COURSES ***

New Independent Vocal Jazz Academy – The first British and International Vocal (Jazz) Academy (BIVJA) workshop course will take place from Spring 2013 with ongoing enrolment thereafter. This is a high quality enterprise implementing the skills and experience of a full rhythm section. A course for those who wish to acquire a greater understanding of the working of that rhythm section plus harmony, aural, jazz music theory and jazz style through practical sessions integrating performance, audience communication, history, safe vocal technique, extending range and improvisation and all ‘tools of the trade’.

Where: Ealing W5, West London
When: Course A – Fortnightly on Sundays plus performance dates and masterclasses
Course B – Fortnightly on Saturdays and as above
Course C – Monday evenings
Who for: Individuals who are serious about developing their knowledge and skills with a view to creating successful jazz performance – all styles, all ages, singers and instrumentalists.
Why: BIVJA is keen to encourage mature students as well as young people at the start of their careers.
There are very few bespoke courses for those who wish to empower themselves with a greater understanding of the rhythm section, band leading and performance confidence.
Is it for me? Call for an informal chat on 020 8992 1571 (leave message and we’ll call you back).
UNIQUE – BIVJA promotes a warm but challenging environment and it’s different because of its very ‘hands on’ approach. As the course develops ALL students will have acquired some practical knowledge of piano, bass, kit and percussion playing and band leading skills in addition to vocal and technical skills. Sessions will be followed by a de-brief, student feedback, career support and Q+A – again a unique opportunity
Specialist workshops – Participants will have access to workshops on specific skills such as recording, PA set up and mixing and workshops with visiting professional singers, instrumentalists and mentors. Tutors will vary including Gareth Williams – piano; Peter Ind – bass; Les Cirkel – drums. The support group created by this enterprise will assist students in self-promotion and performance opportunities.

Thursday Night Saxophone Workshop
www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.
Saxophone Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels Welcome at St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Thursday Night Jazz Workshop
www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P’s Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.
Jazz Workshop Details – Fortnightly Thursdays (Check website for dates) 7:30pm – 9:30pm. £7 Entry. All Levels/Instruments Welcome. St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country’s leading jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition. Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year’s Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhaywood@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP’s arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger’s review is likely to be used.

And finally … NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
