This week we see the return of the formidable Alan Barnes, appearing in an informal setting with Clark’s trio. Alan’s reputation precedes him, a consistent poll winner over decades, with a vast range of experience at the top level. Alan recently featured on the Bryan Ferry “Jazz Age” recording and Great Gatsby soundtrack. He has recently been touring with Paloma Faith and the Guy Barker Orchestra, as well as fulfilling his own busy freelance schedule.Alan is probably the most sought after musician in the country.

The Denmark Street Big Band recreates the swinging jazz sounds of the Big Band era, performing compositions that span an entire century of music. Tonight they will be playing selections from legendary Count Basie albums including The Atomic Mr Basie, Live At The Sands (Before Frank), Live at Newport 1957, Ray Swings, Basie Swings as well as plenty of classic Quincy Jones charts

Hornchurch Jazz Club at Hornchurch Conservative Club, 25 North Street, RM11 1RS, on Sunday, 12th January 2014 from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Brian White’s King Jazz with Goff Dubber. This group is a tribute to the famous pairing of Sidney Bechet (Goff) and Mezz Mezzrow (Brian), who in the swing era, kept the spirit of traditional New Orleans jazz alive. There is a Jam session on the first Thursday of each month in Colchester at The Bull, Crouch Street. They are lucky enough to have a house band that regularly features such great players as Bern Hodgekins (Bass player with Jazznights trio) and Mick Hutton (bass). Our attitude is that of inclusion and after a short set from the house band, we open the stage for jammers and singers. Jazz Jam at the Steamboat Tavern, Ipswich is held on 1st Sunday in the month. We start at 2pm and finish around 5.30 – 6pm. All are welcome – both players and jazz fans. The Ipswich Jazz Collective meet once a month on a Friday to hold a jam session at the Golden Hind Pub on Nacton Road in Ipswich. They start at 7:30 with bass, drums, keyboard gear and a PA set up. Guitarists will need to bring their own amps. There’s no entrance fee and all levels of player are catered for. Local bands also have the chance to do a set on their own. ‘Jazz Jam with Rich Buddie‘ celebrated its first birthday in January. It has gone from strength to strength, and really is the place to be on a Monday Night in Norwich. Every week from 8pm. Rich Buddie aka Barry Wortley, Turk, Simon and special guests play traditional and funky tunes. Every one is welcome to come along to watch or bring their instruments and join in. The regular ‘Norwich JazzJam‘ takes place every Monday from 8.30pm – www.jazzjam.org.uk . Players from across Norfolk (and some from even further afield) enjoy playing the tunes of their choice backed by what has been rated as one of the finest small bands in the region. Led by Brendan Youngs on electric upright bass, with Lee Vasey on his stunningly melodic lead guitar. Mark Jolley adds a highly distinctive electric violin to the frontline, taking over from where Stephan Grappelli left off. Matt Furness on drums drives the whole group – a veteran … but still only 15! Ian Hireson plays beautiful rhythm guitar, laying down perfect chord changes for improvising players. He can sell you the Real Books in C, Eb and Bb at better prices than retail. Brendan invites each jammer to choose a number from the Real Books (or hand out their own charts), set and agree the tempo and intro, then play the head and take the first solo, usually followed by Mark and Lee, each with their own solo chorus, before leading the band out with the head.

8th January – The Gary Wood Swing Quintet

The Quintet will swing through the American Songbook with ease and style. Dan Foster has played with The Pasadena Roof Orchestra & The London Jazz Orchestra, Chris Green appears with numerous bands including The Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra. Ronnie Fenn‘s life has taken him through pop, soul, rock and skiffle jazz. Dan Banks has been playing jazz, pop and classical piano for many years. The Quintet’s extensive repertoire is based around jazz standards, embracing the popular classics of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Hammerstein etc. etc.

15th January – Brian White’s Quintet Tribute to Sydney Bechet & Mezz Mezzrow with Goff Dubber

We welcome back, at members’ request, Brian White’s Quintet. Brian White – clarinet and vocals, Goff Dubber – clarinet, soprano sax and vocals, Graham Barton – piano, Mike Goodwin – bass, Colin Miller – drums. In the 1940’s, while Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw were wowing the jazz world with big band swing, the likes of Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow were recording small group jazz on the KING JAZZ record label. They demonstrated that the 1940’s big band feel could be played on a smaller scale. Brian White and Goff Dubber, with a swinging rhythm section have recreated the sounds and feel of this band with warmth and sincerity.

22nd January – Derek Nash Quintet with Dave Newton

Derek Nash – saxophones, Dave Newton – piano, Martin Shaw – trumpet, Geoff Gascoyne – double bass & Sebastiaan de Krom – drums. Derek, a member of Jools Holland Orchestra since 2004 was voted in the Top 3 Alto Saxophonists in the 2010 British Awards. Dave Newton has been voted Best Jazz Pianist for the 10th time in 2011. Martin Shaw has worked with Cleo Lane, BBC Big Band, Natalie Cole & Sting. Geoff Gascoyne and Sebastiaan de Krom have both worked with Jamie Cullum and between them have performed with Ray Gelato, Eartha Kitt and appeared at The Royal Albert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

29th January – Hot Waffle Big Band

The Hot Waffle Big Band is a relatively new band on the London circuit, only having been formed in 2011 by two ex-NYJO members: Pianist/MD: Graeme Taylor, and Drummer: Matt McDonough. Usually covering all styles of big band including classic swing, this event they will be joined by the legendary voice of Shane Hampsheir, for a slice of Rat Pack and Bublé…. One of the circuit’s most loved and fun bands, featuring many of London’s finest jazz musicians. Early arrival advised.

5th February – Catherine Lima with Paul Higgs Quartet

Catherine Lima – vocals, Paul Higgs – piano, Jerome Davis – double bass, Malcolm Ball – drums & Graham Pike – trumpet/flugel horn/harmonica. Catherine Lima’s alto range and crystal-clear enunciation combine to give a rare treat of beautifully warm, rich sounds with perfect pitch and phrasing. She has ability to interpret a song with a fresh appeal and impeccable timing with a great stage presence and a fabulous voice, so standby for an enjoyable evening of your favourite songs plus an instrumental or two from this talented quartet

With Mike Piggott – violin, Nils Solberg – amplified and acoustic guitar, Jeff Green – guitar, Alan Morgan – double bass. An exciting evening of music encompassing the Great American Songbook – Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin etc. Mike Piggott currently guests at festivals and jazz clubs in the UK and abroad, including an appearance as a member of Martin Taylor’s “Spirit of Django” at the Xabia Jazz Festival in Spain

19th February – Paul Wood + Brian Dee, Bruce Adams, Len Skeat & John Withers

Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra’s vocalist Paul Wood will perform your favourite vocals accompanied by a top drawer, highly talented quartet who need no introduction! When they appeared at the club last June they were much acclaimed by the members. In addition to Paul, you will hear several instrumentals performed by this top drawer quartet. Early arrival essential!

26th February – Tim Huskisson’s Variety Jazz

“Seven top versatile musicians present a variety of Swing, Latin, Mainstream, Dixieland and Modern Jazz. This will be an entertaining show for everybody.” A real variety extravaganza led by Tim Huskisson – clarinet, alto sax and piano. Heather Simmons – vocals and tenor sax. Chris Storey – trumpet. Mick Foster – baritone sax and e-melody saxes. Martin Wheatley – guitar and banjo. Mark Cecil – drums. On the double bass we feature Roger Curphey.

5th March – The Linham Brothers Quintet

Andrew Linham – saxophones, Ryan Linham – trumpet, Rob Brockway – piano, Jason Simpson – double bass, Josh Law – drums. Andrew Linham is an exciting talented young saxophonist who has appeared several times at the Club in the Ken Turner Big Band. Tonight he’s appearing again with his younger also highly talented trumpeter brother Ryan with his own quintet, performing well known jazz standards. Back at Members’ request!

12th March – Jim Mullen, Reg Webb, Alan Clarke & Andy Clenydert

Entertaining Jim Mullen is winner of several “Best Guitar” Jazz Awards and has worked with Georgie Fame, Jim Morrison & Brian Auger. Reg Webb a wonderful, charismatic powerful pianist with an absolutely brilliant voice with smooth vocal delivery. Alan Clarke – drummer worked with Jools Holland and The Drifters. Andy Clenydert – double bass, has accompanied Ronnie Scott and Stan Tracy.

19th March – Julian Marc Stringle’s Dream Band

Julian Marc Stringle – clarinet, saxes, flute and vocals, Jacqui Hicks – vocals Dominic Ashworth – guitar, Neil Angilley, Chris Dodd and Mike Bradley.
The Dream Band is Julian’s own exciting and melodic Latin-influenced jazz sextet featuring keyboard virtuoso Neil Angilley, Canadian guitar star Dominic Ashworth, stylish vocalist Jacqui Hicks, bass ace Chris Dodd and the dynamic Mike Bradley on drums.

26th March – Mervyn Wright Orchestra

This 11 piece orchestra will be playing all your big band favourites from Basie to Ted Heath, Woody Herman to Glenn Miller etc. Mark Stratford will be performing from the Great American Songbook with the many tunes associated with Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Dean Martin etc. Arrangements are all especially written to encapture the full sounds of big bands with all their harmonic content. You may even have the odd joke thrown in!

2nd April – Simon Spillett + Ted Beament Trio

2011 British Jazz Award Winner for Tenor Saxophone Simon Spillett, having appeared at Ronnie Scotts and broadcast with his own band on BBC Radio, will be performing well known standards including Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Jerome Kern compositions with a sprinkling of ballads, and refreshing tempo changes. Ted Beament will be accompanying on piano along with Alan Morgan – double bass & Alan Clarke – drums.

Tony Sandeman’s Natural Selection really is what it says; Tony’s “dream band” selected from some of the finest players on the scene today. First put together at the beginning of 2013 for a few very successful gigs , this is a rare opportunity to see this great band between other commitments. Martin Johnson on drums has been recording and touring extensively throughout the continent with Jo Harman this year. Those familiar with Zak Barrett on saxes will be aware of his work with Guthrie Govan in the band The Fellowship of Funk who have also been working in Europe this year. Dan Banks who joined the band in the summer is a prodigious talent and has become one of the busiest keyboard players and arrangers in Essex. If you haven’t seen bass player Andy Staples before you are in for a nice surprise, he is one of the most outstanding bass players in the UK working with among many others guitar virtuoso Alex Hutchinson, it’s a real privilege to have him on board. Tony Sandeman was one of the founder members of the band C-Level with Gary Plumley who frequently features on the programme at the Jazz Mix. This is a new direction for Tony incorporating all the styles of music he loves from straight ahead groove through Jazz and Latin with a bit of Ceilidh thrown in the mix as well. Tony and co-arranger Dan will be putting a few new twists on some old favourites plus some tunes you may not have heard before on what promises to be a very special night of music!

Chelmsford Jazz Club presents 10 or 11 concerts a year at the Cramphorn Theatre, Fairfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1JG (next to the Civic Theatre). 31st January – The Ted Beament Quintet

Ted Beament keyboards, Colin Watling saxophone, Nick Page guitar, Murray Salmon bass and Les Cirkel drums. With the exception of Les on drums the band are no strangers to Marigolds having entertained our aficionados royally on a number of occasions in the past.

Ted is a local lad, living as he does on the outskirts of Harlow. He is one of the finest pianists that Britain has to offer and has played alongside many fine soloists and is a mainstay of the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Colin Watling is rated by many as one of the most exciting tenor saxophonists on the circuit with his melodic, swinging sound and the full gamut of musical styles but always in great humour. It has been often said that Nick Page is the most underrated Jazz Guitarist in the UK. Extremely talented, versatile and inspirational Nick has played with a huge list of fine musicians plus he is a composer and educator and band leader in his own right. Murray Salmon taught himself double bass and went on to back some of the top acts of the seventies (Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Buddy Greco et al.) as well as playing on the SS Canberra and performing all over the world. Cliff Richard, Des O’Connor, Dana, Cilla Black, The Drifters and Princess Anne are just a few of the people talented Les Cirkel on drums has entertained or played with over the years as well as passing on his expertise and knowledge as a teacher for aspiring drummers.

15th January – The Nick Newell Quartet. £8 members, £9 guests

Nick is two things – firstly, a supreme sax player who has featured at some of the world’s top venues supporting some globally famous bands, and secondly (and more importantly) a great friend of the Mill Hill Jazz Club. As a soloist Nick’s musicianship soars to the heavens with flowing and mellifluous riffs and chops reminiscent of some of the greatest reed players. Supported tonight by three equally talented musicians – Ted Beament (ex-Humphrey Littleton) on keyboard, Murray Salman (Digby Fairweather) on bass and the great Les Cirkel (too many famous bands to mention) drums.

Nick Page was described by Alan Skidmore as “Without doubt the most underrated Jazz Guitarist in the UK.An undiscovered gem of the British Jazz scene.He is extremely talented,versatile and inspirational.I Love working with Nick” . Now that is as good as you can get. A strong supporter of the Mill Hill Jazz Club and a great friend of Val and Gordon, Nick is a delight to listen to. Always producing pitch perfect notes and chords the melodies and improvs flow like a river from his fingers captivating anyone who stops to listen. Nick is supported tonight by his own careful selected band that once again includes Ted Beament on keyboards, Pete Cator on drums and Simon Thorp on bass.

Our first Jam Night of 2014 and this one promises to be a corker. Val ensures that we get the best of the best coming along from far and wide (Watford and Ealing anyway) to stand in front of out house band and show us their talents and skills as singers, players, tappers and performers. Always a fun night that’s supported by an enthusiastic audience The Jazz Jam is not to be missed.

5th February – Hilary Cameron’s Latin Quartet. £8 members, £9 guests

Hilary is a London-based jazz artist. Her roots are in classical music but more recently she went to live in New York for 2 years studying jazz at Manhattan School of Music and playing in clubs and venues in New York City. In London she started out on keyboards/vocals touring with the Gail Ann Dorsey Band and Womack and Womack. She then formed her own jazz/latin trio and performed at venues such as the Vortex and the 606 club in London. Her influences are wide ranging and include salsa and Eastern European music. She toured with Europe’s only all-female salsa band “Candela” and recorded with London-based band “Just East of Jazz”. Hilary has recorded thirteen albums with UK based artists including Clare Hirst, Andrea Vicari, Jeremy Shoham (Just East of Jazz), Zoe Schwarz and The Steve Taylor Big Band.

12th February – Sam Kelly’s Blues Band. £8 members, £9 guests

Sam’s long career covers live gigs, festivals, drum workshops, theatre work, radio and TV sessions, both in the UK and overseas. He has been voted into Blues In Britain magazine Gallery of the Greats, as a five-times winner of the ‘UK Drummer of the Year’ award. Combined with his years of experience and his reputation within the UK blues fraternity, Sam is a highly accessible, sought after drummer. His list of credits is enormous and will take up all of our web space to include but it includes amongst many others: Madeline Bell, Linda Lewis, Hamish Stewart and the Cymande All Stars featuring Jimmy Lindsay, Chaka Khan, Dr John, Ben E. 5th – Bob Dwyer’s Bix and Pieces. Bob Dwyer’s Bix and Pieces playing, as their name suggests, many numbers associated with Bix Beiderbecke as well as other jazz numbers. Bob Dwyer leads with trombone and Max Emmons on trumpet, however John Bayne’s bass saxophone playing is always popular.
12th – Brian White’s King Jazz with Goff Dubber. This group is a tribute to the famous pairing of Sidney Bechet (Goff) and Mezz Mezzrow (Brian), who in the swing era, kept the spirit of traditional New Orleans jazz alive.
19th – The Downhome Jazz Band. This popular led by trumpet player Bill Jenkins returns to the club for their umpteenth visit of the year. Always a great band to listen and dance to.
26th – The Phoenix Jazz Band. Robin Coombs leads this long established traditional seven piece jazz band on another visit to the club.

Reuben began playing piano and violin at five years old and was raised on an eclectic mix of music including jazz, gospel, neo soul, hip hop, RnB and classical music. His professional journey began in church where he would play every week fine honing his skills in improvisation and the blues. This eventually led him to study at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Reuben made a big splash at our festival last year with his trio. Still a student at Trinity Laban, he first played at our venue with the late Abram Wilson. He is one of the most exciting performers on the scene, drawing inspiration from Gospel, Soul and of course a healthy dose of jazz piano masters. BERKHAMSTED JAZZ . We present live jazz of all kinds regularly for a listening audience in a relaxed club atmosphere, with a reasonably priced licensed bar. We welcome all ages with concessionary prices for members, children and students. All concerts are £10 for members and Dacorum Card holders, and £13 for visitors and guests.

We are firmly established as one of the premier jazz venues in the South East of England, attracting the best of musical talent from a wide area. We frequently have full houses for our events so it is worthwhile to book early. Our belief is that jazz is for enjoyment and we wish to encourage listeners to all the different elements that jazz comprises. We are neither a ‘Traditional
Jazz’ club, nor a ‘Modern Jazz’ club; we try to include as many facets of jazz as possible in our programme. The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The Hertfordshire Music Service and North Herts Youth Jazz run the North Herts Youth Jazz Big Band

The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings, term time, at The North Herts Music School, Highbury House, Highbury Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 9RU 01462 434052. Rehearsals run from 1715 to 1845. Up to age 19 or older if in full time education. We would welcome interest from rhythm section, horn section players and singers. Musicians of grade 5 standard and upwards. Either acoustic or electric bass players. Please be prepared to read charts too! Improvisers will be especially welcome but guidance and instruction will be given to all who wish it. We would also like to encourage composers to come along and write for this group. This band will perform at least once in public each term to promote the playing of jazz amoung young people and perform a wide range of jazz repertoire, from Duke Ellington to Mark Lockheart. There is a termly fee for membership, though a remission of fees scheme is operated by the Hertfordshire Music Service, subject to terms and conditions.

One of the youth orchestras is The Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) for young musicians who have a love for jazz. Members need to attain a minimum of grade 5 in their chosen instrument, and entry is by audition. The EYJO meets monthly for rehearsals. EYJO also go on tour and perform around the county. Their Musical Director is Martin Hathaway, who has directed the EYJO since 1991 and is one of the country’s leading jazz musicians. Martin has won awards for both performance and composition. He has recorded and toured with Radiohead and appeared on their Platinum album Kid A. He is also the resident conductor of Young Essex Jazz and Essex Junior Jazz. 1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click “reply” when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know – we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn’t get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.
